KNOWN BRAND REVEAL: When your brand is the threshold between who you were and who you're becoming

Last year I met Kyla Hallums when she found herself in an identity threshold. Well known for her virality on Instagram as "Baila with Kyla", Kyla wanted to reestablish herself as a somatic coach, with the quiet inner work that made it possible for her to be so confident and passionate in her viral videos.

With an established audience that knew her as a certain thing, this was a scary leap for Kyla. Her old identity was ready to be rewritten and the new one not fully written yet.

I asked her to share some of her experience and thoughts about going through the Brand Passage in this liminal space.

NOTE: Prices for the Brand Passage will increase for anything booked after August 1. There's still time to schedule a Meet & Greet Call if you too are in this kind of threshold space.

Before we started working together, how would you describe your “brand”?

Hmmm. Transitional. I felt in the space of not 100% sure about my identity as it has changed over the years. From dance instructor to somatic coach just didn’t feel natural. My profession has always been difficult to put into words. I felt pretty chaotic and not confident when I would talk to people about what it was that I did.

What were your biggest hesitations about investing in your brand and website?

Ooof. Well the fear that it wouldn’t come back. I have trouble receiving help when it comes to business and jumping in to this work with Sara was truly the first time I had ever let anyone into my world in this way. Thankfully Sara was so thoughtful in our work together, it felt deeply human. The more we worked together the more comfortable and confident I felt that she was capturing my essence which then gave me more words to be able to express it outwardly.

What felt hardest or most vulnerable about the identity work itself?

I just knew that going down this road made it all real. Finally committing to the brand, meant also showing up in a different way and in the beginning I had some pretty big resistance to that. I was honest with Sara throughout the process and she had a gentle way of acknowledging my fears while also helping me push through them. As the designs started to come together I felt myself also mirroring that, as the work completed I also settled into this new version of myself that was required to be able to hold it all. Having the visual was super important, and helped me let the vulnerability and fear be a passenger instead of taking over and pushing me fully into inaction.

What shifted for you after launching your new brand?

Honestly more than anything I just felt myself taking myself more seriously. Like it felt like having a platform finally where someone can go and learn about who I am and what I do, and it looked GOOD. It didn’t feel elusive, or like someone would have to talk to me to fully understand what I do. Like it’s all there which helps me spend time on the things that really need my attention.

What do you think has changed about how you’re seen, heard and felt in your work now that you’ve launched?

More respected. People see the website and I can feel that they just automatically trust me and the business more. It made it all feel much more real. Ideas that were just on paper before are now easily accessible and understandable to anyone. It also provided better systems for me to able to do more. I think I’m seen as much more of a professional, and someone that can be trusted in the work that I do. Sara was such a huge piece in all of this, her eye for branding is spot on. Anytime I get feedback on the website people always say it feels like you! And I think that’s the best testimonial I could possibly give. Sara captured my essence and created something beautiful, and my job is to just rise to the occasion as I work through the site now.

Field Notes:

In the Studio: Launching two client websites this week. It's always a feels a little left brain tedious towards the end, but seeing all the work and intention that went into the website itself is the best feeling.

Listening to: Season Two of The Telepathy Tapes. Obsessed. I need someone to talk about it with, stat.

Reading: Dungeon Crawler Carl. This one definitely has me stretching my comfort zone, but I'm enjoying how different and cheeky it is.

At the Homestead: We just got our landscaping done out front and I'm feeling like a very proud middle aged lady right now. Everything that's planted is small for now, but I'm excited to watch it grow into the colorful Minnesota-inspired garden beds of my dreams.

In case we haven’t met...

Hi, I’m Sara, an identity reader and brand designer. I see identity and brand as so closely tied that you can’t build one without the other. My work is all about helping you see yourself clearly so you can express yourself and your ideas more freely and fully.
